Municipal responsibilities can be confusing. Here are a few useful clarifications:

Myth: “The mayor can make Council do it.”
Fact: View Royal’s mayor has one vote, just like each councillor. Most decisions require majority support. The mayor provides leadership, but cannot independently approve the budget or change zoning. B.C. guide to Council responsibilities

Myth: “My assessment rose 10%, so my taxes must rise 10%.”
Fact: Your bill depends on tax revenue requirements and how your assessment changes relative to other properties in the same class. An assessment increase does not automatically produce an equivalent tax increase. BC Assessment explanation

Myth: “Every road in View Royal is the Town’s responsibility.”

Myth: “Every development application gets a public hearing.”
Fact: Different applications follow different processes. Provincial law prohibits public hearings for certain zoning changes, including those consistent with the Official Community Plan. Myth: “Development charges can pay for any municipal expense.”
